Ahead of the Environment Council debate on the CO2 emission targets for cars and vans on 28 June, the Zürich 5 Coalition sent a letter to Member States’ Climate Ministers.
In the letter, the Coalition urges the Ministers to recognize the potential of alternative, renewable and circular fuels, such as biomethane, and their substantial contribution to the de-fossilization of the road transport sector. In the letter, the Zürich 5 Coalition recommends the ministers to take a technology neutral approach and to provide a concrete framework for internal combustion engines (ICEs) fueled with biomethane. EU Ministers should not focus merely on electrification and the uptake of hydrogen but consider all sustainable options.
We hope the Environment Council will recognize that with a technology neutral approach, the EU can reap the maximum benefits in its transition towards climate neutrality.
